Assisted suicide Bill Second Reading today

Today is the big day. At 10am, the House of Lords begins the Second Reading of the Leadbeater assisted suicide Bill.

Over 200 Peers – a parliamentary record – had put their names down to speak at Second Reading. Given this incredibly high number, a second day of Second Reading has now been added, which is scheduled for next Friday (19 September).

Although no vote is typically held at Second Reading in the House of Lords, the debate today will be crucial in determining the direction the Lords will take on this Bill.

If you are interested in following the debate, you can watch it live from 10am on Parliament TV online, which you can access here.

Our team will also be live-posting key videos from the debate, with commentary throughout the day, on our X account as the debate progresses, which you can access here.

If you have an X account, please repost videos you feel are most relevant to your followers. This will be helpful in educating the wider public on the negative impact this Bill will have on vulnerable people in the UK – and help build support for the Bill to be rejected by the House of Lords.

Finally, thank you to everyone who has sent letters in the post to Peers asking them to oppose the Bill. If you have not done so yet, it’s not too late to send letters, as we need these letters to continue to arrive throughout next week and beyond Second Reading, where the Bill will proceed to Committee Stage.

If you haven’t sent your letters yet, click here to access our EasyAction tool that makes it incredibly simple for you to send a physical letter to a Peer now.
