On Friday 20 June, MPs narrowly voted at Third Reading in favour of Kim Leadbeater’s dangerous assisted suicide Bill. The Bill lost more than half of the size of its majority between Second and Third Reading and did not have an ‘absolute majority’ in the House of Commons – fewer than half of eligible MPs voted for the Bill.

This means that the battle is far from over. The Bill now lacks a strong mandate and can still be defeated. The House of Lords has a responsibility to scrutinise the Bill in depth and reject it if necessary.

The Bill may also return to the House of Commons during what is known as ping-pong, the parliamentary stage after both Houses have considered a Bill and each House considers suggested changes made by the other. MPs may vote again on proposed changes to the Bill, which may be substantial and could even lead to its defeat.

It is therefore important that your MP knows there are a large number of people in their constituency who remain strongly opposed to the Bill. It is also important that you thank your MP if they voted against the Bill at Third Reading.

Please enter your postcode in the box above to find out how your MP voted and ask them to oppose assisted suicide if the Bill returns to the House of Commons.
