There had been no prior public consultation, no evidence sessions, no detailed scrutiny at Committee Stage – instead, the largest change to abortion law in over half a century had just forty-six minutes of backbench debate, then a ministerial closing speech in which the minister refused to take any interventions.
If it becomes law, this amendment would likely lead to a significant increase in the number of women performing late-term abortions at home, endangering the lives of many more women. It would also lead to an increased number of viable babies’ lives being ended well beyond the 24-week abortion time limit and beyond the point at which they would be able to survive outside the womb.
We have set up an easy-to-use tool to enable you to find out how your MP voted on this issue, and also to contact them by way of follow-up, either to thank them for their vote or to express your ongoing concerns about the proposed law change. This is important because it is possible that MPs may reconsider abortion-related amendments if they are sent back to the House of Commons by the House of Lords during what is known as ‘ping-pong’ (the parliamentary stage after both Houses have considered a Bill and each House considers suggested changes made by the other) of if even more radical future proposals are brought forward.
This is why it is vital that your MP hears from you now.
