Legalising assisted dying would be a slippery slope

Drawing on a membership that includes doctors, social workers, lawyers and philosophers, the House of Lords will be at its best tomorrow when debating the ethical, medical and legal issues that arise from Baroness Meacher’s bill to legalise assisted dying.

All who speak in the debate – for and against – will demonstrate a shared concern: the compassion we feel for those suffering painful deaths. All will understand the need to balance the sanctity of human life with the freedom of the individual to make decisions about that life.
