If we don’t improve end of life care, people will opt for assisted dying

Lord Falconer is a dogged fellow. As Charlie Falconer he pursued a successful legal career, but finally got into politics despite being turned down as a parliamentary candidate.

His former flatmate Tony Blair made him a life peer, welcoming him into government. When he got fat, he lived on Diet Coke and apples to lose five stone. When his assisted dying Bill didn’t make it onto the statute book in 2014, he was undeterred, throwing his weight behind several other attempts, the latest of which is the private member’s Bill on the issue from Labour MP Kim Leadbeater.
