How ‘DIY’ home abortion is placing women at risk: A presentation of the evidence

Governments are currently deciding on whether to make permanent the temporary measure allowing ‘DIY’ home abortions in England, Wales and Scotland.

On Tuesday 23rd March, the All-Party Parliamentary Pro-Life Group hosted an event for MPs from across the UK, along with politicians from the Scottish Parliament and Welsh Senedd, where experts covered the latest evidence on how ‘DIY’ home abortions are placing women at risk. Speakers included former Global Director of Clinics Development at Marie Stopes International (now MSI Reproductive Choices) Kevin Duffy and Dr Calum Miller who works as a doctor in the NHS along with being a Research Associate at the University of Oxford, where his research focuses on abortion policy.

Since home abortions have been temporarily allowed, as has been reported extensively in the media, a number of significant problems have put the lives and health of many women in danger. You can read more about these significant problems here. It is vital that Governments do not give into pressure from the abortion lobby, led by the UK’s largest abortion providers, and make ‘DIY’ home abortions permanent.

The webinar presented an opportunity for politicians to hear more about the recent evidence demonstrating massive under-reporting of the complications women are suffering as a result of ‘DIY’ home abortion. The speakers’ expert analyses drew upon recent Freedom of Information requests showing an increase in the number of calls to ambulance services since the ‘DIY’ home abortion policy was put into place, and addressed the concerning implications this policy has had for the medical profession and for the safety of women due to the removal of critical safeguards against coercion.
