Dear Emmerdale, eugenics should never be a source of entertainment

Hundreds have complained to Ofcom after it was revealed a forthcoming Emmerdale episode will feature a couple deciding to abort their unborn baby after tests show it has Down’s syndrome. Catholic pro-life campaigner and former Conservative councillor Chris Whitehouse says the episode is another example of outdated attitudes toward disability.

Down Syndrome Awareness Month had hardly concluded when, in a stunning lack of sensitivity, ITV’s Emmerdale producers revealed their intention to introduce a new storyline covering the disability-selective abortion of a baby found to have Down’s syndrome.
