Assisted suicide – Next important action

Thank you so much if you have already emailed or posted a letter to your MP asking them to vote no to the revived assisted suicide Bill.

Now, with just over three weeks until the Second Reading vote on 11 September, we need you to take an important next step today: request a brief meeting with your MP and ask them to vote NO.

Only 12 MPs need to switch for the Bill to be defeated at Second Reading. With the vote this close, every meeting with an MP matters – whatever your MP’s current position on the Bill.

We have just launched a simple new tool that sends your MP a short, polite meeting request. It takes just 30 seconds.

Former MP and broadcaster Miriam Cates has also joined us to show you how to prepare, sharing insider advice about what these meetings are really like and how to make yours count.

You do not need to prepare before sending it. Request the meeting first; you can prepare afterwards. Your MP’s office can then reply with available times, and the page gives you everything you need to get ready.

WHY MEETING YOUR MP MAKES A DIFFERENCE

MPs receive a huge number of emails. A meeting gives your MP focused time to hear your concerns and shows them, clearly and memorably, that this issue matters deeply to local voters.

You do not need any special expertise or a personal story – just sharing your concerns, in your own words, makes a difference.

MPs are used to meeting constituents like you and expect to hear their views on important issues. We know the idea of meeting your MP might feel a little daunting, but it really is something anyone can do.

To make it as easy as possible, we’ve put everything you need to prepare in one place. On the page, you’ll find:

  • A practical video guide, Insider Tips for Meeting with Your MP, where Miriam Cates (former MP and broadcaster) and Rupert Evans (our Director of Public Affairs) share tips and talking points to help you prepare
  • An in-depth step-by-step ‘how to’ guide
  • A clear MP briefing you can take to your meeting

Please do not wait until you feel fully prepared before requesting the meeting. MPs are busy, and their diaries fill up quickly. Request the meeting today; you can use Miriam and Rupert’s video, the step-by-step guide and the briefing to prepare afterwards.

Even if you wrote to your MP earlier this month, or already know how they voted last time, please take this new action as well. A meeting can help persuade an MP who supported the Bill, influence someone who is undecided, or help ensure an MP who opposes it is there to vote on the day.

Please request a meeting with your MP now. It takes just 30 seconds.

Thank you so much for everything you are doing.
