The House of Lords is expected to vote on the abortion up to birth clause, passed by MPs last June, on Wednesday 18 March. If Peers vote for the clause, it will, sadly, become law.

23 Church of England bishops, known as the Lords Spiritual, currently sit in the House of Lords and could make the difference between these extreme proposals passing or being defeated.

Typically, the bishops delegate one or two of their number to attend and vote in debates. Sadly, the bishops have not always been reliable in turning up and voting in favour of pro-life legislation.

However, for an issue of this importance and seriousness, which affects the moral life of our nation, it is absolutely vital that all 23 bishops attend the House of Lords for this debate, most likely to be on 18 March, and vote for Baroness Monckton’s amendment (424) to remove the abortion up to birth clause (208) from the Bill and Baroness Stroud’s amendment (425) that would help protect women and babies from dangerous late term abortions by reintroducing in-person consultations with a medical professional before abortion pills can be prescribed.

It is therefore vital that as many people as possible contact the bishops to urge them to clear their diaries and turn up to vote for these amendments.

We have produced an easy-to-use tool that allows people like you, who are concerned about the abortion up to birth amendment, to email one of the Lords Spiritual to ask them to do the above.

If you wish to do so, feel free to edit the suggested email using your own words. But please be polite and respectful if you do so.

Please note that this tool is available to all, as the Lords Spiritual aim to be a voice for people of all denominations and faiths, not just Christians, and sit in the House of Lords to provide moral, ethical, and spiritual perspectives within the legislative process.

Please note that the country is divided into dioceses, each led by a bishop. Not every diocesan bishop sits in the House of Lords. If you live in a part of the country where the bishop is one of the Lords Spiritual, then the email you send will go to the diocesan bishop who represents your area. If you live in the north of England, but your diocesan bishop does not sit in the Lords, then your email will go to the Archbishop of York, who is one of the Lords Spiritual. If you live in the south of England, but your diocesan bishop does not sit in the Lords, or if you live in Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales, then your email will go to the new Archbishop of Canterbury, who also sits in the Lords and historically has been recognised as the leader of the global Anglican Communion.

Please enter your postcode in the box above to write to one of the bishops in the House of Lords now to explain why they should oppose the abortion up to birth clause.
