An analysis published in The Independent shows that at least 36 MPs who supported the Bill at Second Reading last year made it clear they did so only to allow further debate or because they had concerns that mean they won’t commit to supporting the Bill at Third Reading.
With the vote last year passing by a margin of 55, just 28 MPs switching their stance to oppose the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill would ensure it is defeated.
After the flagship High Court judge safeguard was dropped from the Bill, the Royal College of Psychiatrists, which takes a neutral stance on assisted suicide, has this week issued a press release setting out its opposition to the Bill and raising concerns about Kim Leadbeater’s new proposal for psychiatrists to be included on panels assessing assisted suicide applications.
The Government’s impact assessment concerning the Bill warned that within a decade, over 4,500 people could die each year under the Bill. The impact assessment also estimates that up to 145,888 hours of NHS staff time per year (over 6,000 working days) would be diverted to assisted suicide from other services, and warned about the estimated £10 million per year cost of the Voluntary Assisted Dying Commissioner’s office.
Your MP needs to know there are a large number of people in their constituency who continue to be strongly engaged on this issue and that you want them to oppose the Leadbeater assisted suicide Bill at Report Stage and Third Reading.
That is why it is vital that your MP hears from you now.
