While the Bill passed its first hurdle, the vote was far closer than many commentators expected, and this is just the start of a long journey through the Commons and Lords before it could become law.
An analysis published in The Independent shows that at least 36 MPs who supported the Bill made it clear they did so only to allow further debate or because they had concerns that mean they won’t commit to supporting the Bill at Third Reading.
With the vote passing by a margin of 55, just 28 MPs switching their stance to oppose the Bill would ensure it is defeated at Third Reading.
With more time to understand the major issues with legalising assisted suicide, many other MPs could also shift to opposing this Bill. If enough do, the Bill will be defeated at Third Reading, preventing this dangerous law change from becoming law.
