The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Dying Well will host an event for MPs and Peers on Wednesday 16 June where they will hear from expert speakers on recent developments in palliative care, including pain management. They will also explore with the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Matt Hancock the options for improving access to excellent end-of-life care for everyone and the true public opinion surrounding assisted suicide.
Speakers will include Professor Katherine Sleeman, the Laing Galaska Chair in Palliative Care at King’s College London, National Institute for Health Research Clinical Scientist, and Honorary Consultant in palliative medicine, and Doctor Ian Wilson, Deputy Medical Director at the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, Consultant in Pain Medicine and Anaesthesia, and former chair of the British Medical Association representative body and end of life care project.
The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Dying Well is meeting at a critical time. In April, the Health Secretary Matt Hancock attended a meeting of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Choice at the End of Life and discussed how the Government could gather more evidence on the issue. Only last month, a new assisted suicide bill received its first reading in the House of Lords with its second reading expected in the autumn.
The APPG for Dying Well stands against the legalisation of assisted suicide and instead promotes access to excellent palliative care. This meeting will inform the Health Secretary Matt Hancock and your local politicians of the options for improving access to excellent end-of-life care for everyone, and warn them of the dangers of legalising assisted suicide in the UK.
Please enter your postcode in the box above to email your MP requesting they attend the meeting on Wednesday 16 June so they can hear expert evidence on the options for improving access to excellent end-of-life care for everyone and why the UK should not legalise assisted suicide.
If you personally would like to attend you may do so by emailing the secretariat, sophiej.clarke@parliament.uk, who will send joining instructions for the meeting.
Finally, if you or anyone you know has a personal story related to concerns on the legalisation of assisted suicide, we would encourage you to please consider writing a personalised email to your MP on this matter. You can find your MP’s email address here.
