The Where Do They Stand? platform is an easily-accessible online tool that showcases the records of how every MP has voted on life-related issues in the UK Parliament.

The purpose of the platform is to provide voters around the country with up-to-date information on their MP’s voting record on life issues so they can make an informed decision when considering who to vote for in elections.

The Where Do They Stand? platform is part of the wider Right To Life UK website, which is the most viewed pro-life website in Europe and the fourth most viewed pro-life website in the world.

This major update to Where Do They Stand? includes a number of enhancements that are designed to increase the positive impact the platform has and make it an even more useful resource for members of the public throughout the United Kingdom.

Both Lives Pledge

Ahead of General Elections, we have run a nationwide initiative to ask MPs to sign the pro-life Both Lives Pledge.

  • The Both Lives Pledge outlines three policy changes that are designed to increase protection for babies in the womb and end pregnancy discrimination for women – policies that will save lives by protecting and supporting both mother and child.
  • Ahead of the 2019 General Election, over 200 MP candidates signed the Both Lives Pledge. This helped inform voters of their MP candidates’ position on life issues and helped our Public Affairs team identify which newly elected MPs would support pro-life changes to legislation during the new Parliament.

In this release, we have fully integrated the Both Lives Pledge into Where Do They Stand and it will become a permanent feature of the platform, rather than just being run during election times.

  • This will enable any member of the public, at any time, to contact their local MP asking them to sign the Both Lives Pledge, and the large number of people that visit the platform each day will be encouraged to take this action. If MPs then sign the pledge, this information will be reported alongside the MP’s voting record on the Where Do They Stand? platform.
  • The purpose of this new integration is to get many more MPs to sign up to the Both Lives Pledge ahead of pro-life legislation being brought forward to Parliament.

Voting records for Scotland and Northern Ireland

Holyrood and Stormont now included on the platform

Holyrood

Holyrood

  • In 2016, abortion was devolved from Westminster to the Scottish Parliament, meaning that MSPs can now change abortion legislation for Scotland from Holyrood. Similarly, assisted suicide is a devolved issue in Scotland and there is currently a Bill progressing through the Scottish Parliament to introduce assisted suicide to Scotland.
  • Given these recent developments, transparency on how MSPs are voting on life issues is vital, so we have released voting records for all 129 MSPs.

Stormont

Stormont

  • Abortion is a devolved issue in Northern Ireland and there is currently a Bill progressing through the Northern Ireland Assembly to stop abortion up to birth for disabilities such as Down’s syndrome, cleft lip and club foot.
  • It is important that the public in Northern Ireland are aware of the voting records of all MLAs so they can make an informed decision on who they vote for in the May Stormont elections, so we have released voting records for all 90 MLAs.
