Ask your MP to attend an important parliamentary meeting on assisted suicide
The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Dying Well will host an event for MPs, Peers, MSPs, and MSs on Tuesday 7 September where they will hear from international medical professionals on their concerns about assisted suicide and euthanasia based on their experiences in jurisdictions where they have been legalised.
Among other matters, they will discuss the disturbing medical and social consequences of assisted suicide laws in Oregon, Canada, and Belgium.
Speakers will include Dr Leonie Herx, the Past-President of the Canadian Society of Palliative Care Physicians and Divisional Chair of Palliative Medicine at Queen’s University, and Dr Benoît Beuselink, a Belgian oncologist and professor of oncology at KU Leuven.
Other contributors will include Dr Brick Lantz, a physician from Oregon with over 30 years’ experience and a state representative for the American Academy of Medical Ethics, Professor Willem Lemmens, a Belgian bioethicist and the Professor of Early Modern Philosophy and Ethics at the University of Antwerp, and Dr Satya Chandragiri, a psychiatrist from Oregon with over 20 years’ experience.
The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Dying Well is meeting at a critical time. In May, a new assisted suicide bill received its first reading in the House of Lords, with its second reading expected next month.
The APPG on Dying Well stands against the legalisation of assisted suicide and instead promotes access to excellent palliative care.
Please enter your postcode in the box above to email your local politicians requesting they attend the meeting on Tuesday 7 September so they can hear expert medical evidence on why the UK should not legalise assisted suicide.
If you would also like to attend, you may do so by emailing the secretariat, sophiej.clarke@parliament.uk, who will send joining instructions for the meeting.
