Jane Jessop tried her best to remain philosophical on January 19 1985, when she was told by a doctor that her newborn son, Tommy, had Down’s syndrome, the genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra chromosome in a baby’s cells.
She still remembers being “very worried” about how the diagnosis might affect her toddler, William, and wondered whether other mothers would look at her differently.
