Almost 1,100 lives lost to abortion in Northern Ireland since abortion imposed last year

Almost 1,100 abortions have been carried out in Northern Ireland since the imposition of abortion on the region in March last year.

The Department of Health has reported 1,091 abortions in Northern Ireland since 31 March 2020.

The DUP MLA, Christopher Stalford raised the question in Northern Ireland Assembly last month which received the following reply:

“From the 1st January 2020 to 30 March 2020 there were seven terminations of pregnancy carried out in HSC [Health and Social Care] Hospitals in Northern Ireland. Since The Abortion (Northern Ireland) Regulations 2020 came into force on 31 March 2020 the Department of Health has received 1091 notifications of termination”.

Abortion in Northern Ireland

Since the imposition of a new extreme abortion regime last year, abortion has been available in Northern Ireland throughout the first 12 weeks of gestation on demand. This abortion provision also allows abortion on the basis of the sex of the child.

Polling from 2020 showed that the majority of voters only want abortion to be available in cases where the mother’s life is at risk, a position in line with the law before the Westminster Parliament imposed a change on Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland was the last region of the British Isles to have widespread abortion introduced into the country. It is estimated that 100,000 people are alive in Northern Ireland today who would not have been if abortion were available as it was in the rest of the U.K. This figure was confirmed by the Advertising Standards Authority in 2017.

Right To Life UK spokesperson, Catherine Robinson, said: “Sadly, these figures are more or less expected. 100,000 people are alive today in Northern Ireland because of their strong pro-life laws, laws which sadly no longer exist”.

“The change in the abortion law in Northern Ireland was deeply undemocratic and promoters of abortion apparently abandoned all principles in their single-minded pursuit of expanding abortion access, regardless of other considerations. This was the single biggest change to abortion law in the UK since 1967 and the people of Northern Ireland had next to no say in the matter. In June 2019, when abortion in Northern Ireland was being discussed in Westminster, The Scottish National Party abandoned its long standing practice of abstaining in all devolved matters to give its members a free vote on this issue. Abortion promoter Stella Creasy MP, did all she could to ensure that the people of Northern Ireland were not consulted on this matter”.

“We have now seen 1,091 abortions in Northern Ireland, the fruit of a sinister subversion of ordinary parliamentary procedure and democratic practice”.

Dear reader,

You may be surprised to learn that our 24-week abortion time limit is out of line with the majority of European Union countries, where the most common time limit for abortion on demand or on broad social grounds is 12 weeks gestation.

The latest guidance from the British Association of Perinatal Medicine enables doctors to intervene to save premature babies from 22 weeks. The latest research indicates that a significant number of babies born at 22 weeks gestation can survive outside the womb, and this number increases with proactive perinatal care.

This leaves a real contradiction in British law. In one room of a hospital, doctors could be working to save a baby born alive at 23 weeks whilst, in another room of that same hospital, a doctor could perform an abortion that would end the life of a baby at the same age.

The majority of the British population support reducing the time limit. Polling has shown that 70% of British women favour a reduction in the time limit from 24 weeks to 20 weeks or below.
