RTL Tribute to Jim Dobbin MP
Our Trustees and Staff were very saddened to learn yesterday afternoon of the passing away of Jim Dobbin MP, a great long-standing friend and supporter of the right-to-life cause in general, and RTL in particular. He was a great man, and his death is a profound loss to the right-to-life movement, Parliament, UK politics, and British society.
The son of a coal miner in Fife, Scotland, and having studied bacteriology and virology at Napier College, Edinburgh, Jim was a microbiologist in the NHS for 33 years, 22 of which at the Royal Oldham Hospital. This experience informed his recognition of the humanity, dignity, and rights of pre-born children.
He became a member of Parliament in 1997 for Heywood and Middleton, and was Chair and then Co-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Pro-Life Group. He was also a member of the All-Party Group for Hospices and Palliative Care, the real answer to most perceived need for assisted suicide. Throughout his career in Parliament, and fired by his devout Catholic faith and strong Socialist principles, Jim fought tirelessly for the right to life of the most vulnerable members of British society.
Our condolences go to his family, and may he rest in peace.
